Informations on Basque cake

🥮 THE GOURMET SYMBOL OF THE BASQUE COUNTRY

The artisanal Basque cake with pastry cream is one of the emblematic treasures of Basque gastronomy. With its round shape and golden crust, this generous cake delights with the contrast between a crisp shortcrust pastry on the outside and a melting cream-filled center.

Flavoured with almond and vanilla, and enhanced by a delicate hint of rum, it perfectly embodies the warmth and conviviality of the Basque Country. Whether enjoyed as a dessert or for afternoon tea, each bite evokes the simple and generous flavours of the local terroir.

🏡 AN AUTHENTIC FAMILY TRADITION

Known as “Etxeko Bixkotxa” in Basque — literally “the house cake” — this dessert originated in the homes of Labourd and Lower Navarre in the 19th century. Traditionally prepared by the women of the household, it was passed down from generation to generation as a family craft.

Each family had its own recipe, adapted to the fruits and ingredients available: pastry cream, black cherry jam, plums or apricots. This diversity explains why no two Basque cakes are ever truly alike, each one bearing the signature of its home.

🍒 TWO VERSIONS, ONE SHARED PLEASURE

Today, our artisanal Basque cake is available in two essential recipes: pastry cream or black cherry jam. Two flavours, two personalities, yet the same gourmet pleasure. With its soft texture, delicately sweet taste and generous aromas, it pairs perfectly with a coffee, a tea or a glass of Basque cider.

To preserve all its qualities, store it in a cool, dry place and enjoy within 2 to 3 days after purchase.

Our Basque cakes are prepared on Wednesdays for shipment the same day or on the following Thursday. However, in the event of a stock shortage, the dispatch of your order may be postponed until the following Wednesday. Please do not hesitate to contact us should you require any further information.

    Merchant's answer

Thank you for your message. After checking, the expiration date was actually not exceeded, it was simply the stamp that was slightly smudged. It was not the 20th but indeed the 28th, so the date was still valid. We apologize for the confusion, and thank you again for your vigilance! Best regards, The Agour team.
